I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting for this to happen. Ever since I first heard about BluRays and since Pat and I bought our PS3, I have been checking for Alien and Aliens to come out. I waited, very patiently may I add, for 4 years. FOUR YEARS. During that time, an expensive BluRay box set came out, but that included the sequels I would happily forget exist. Why won’t they let me forget they exist??? Those movies are awful and have none of the tension or atmosphere that the first two had.

So why did it take that long for these first two awesome movies to come out on BluRay? Especially considering what was available on BluRay during those four years. Films that I guess you really really need to see in high definition like: Clerks, Wedding Crashers, The 40 Year Old Virgin…you see where I’m going with this. I still can’t think of a cooler movie to have on BluRay than Alien or Aliens. I mean, come on, the mechanical biology of the sets and the alien(s) just begs for high definition on a really nice TV. In the dark. With some candy.

Anyway, both Alien and Aliens have been released on BluRay and they are FABULOUS. You can really see the details that were put into the set pieces and the creatures themselves. What an excellent addition to my BluRay collection! I have a whole new appreciation for the films. Also, the versions I purchased had the director’s/extended cut available and wow…definitely longer but those versions had so much more depth than the theatrical version. I enjoyed them and I wonder why they cut them. Yeah, the movies were long but SO worthwhile.

Watch them on BluRay and tell me I’m wrong in thinking these should have been released way before Clerks.

And just in case you are gluttons for punishment and want to see those horrible third and fourth movies…

Something a little different movie review-wise…I’m going for a top 5 list of my favorite Coen Brothers movies.

5) Miller’s Crossing

4) No Country For Old Men

3) Fargo

2) Blood Simple

1) O Brother Where Art Thou?

I know a lot of people will disagree with my choice for number 1. I stand by O Brother. It’s a very clever film and it was beautifully shot. The whole film has a patina that hints at its much older origin. I’m sorry but any film that takes a classic story (Homer’s Odyssey) and recreates it into an oddly funny film with a strangely catchy soundtrack is automatically awesome in my book. I absolutely LOVE this movie. It is tied with Annie Hall has my favorite movie of all time. It’s just that good.
